Bierstadt on View at Denver Art Museum


A previously uncatalogued painting by the 19th-century landscape artist Albert Bierstadt that had been given to the Colorado School of Mines in 1938 is part of a new exhibition at the Denver Art Museum. "The beauty of Bierstadt should be enjoyed by more people, and we are very pleased that the museum will provide that opportunity," observed Mines' president Bill Scoggins. Thomas Smith, the Petrie Institute's director, added: "To be able to display works like Bierstadt's magnificent view of the Yosemite Valley helps people (further) understand the Western experience."

Record Attendance at Reunion 2010


Reunion Weekend 2010 set a new record of 456 attendees! The Reunion 2010 Committee, which generated interest in the event by contacting classmates starting in January, was credited for much of this success.

Mines Team Places First in Steel Bridge


The Trusty Trussers won first place at the ASCE Rocky Mountain Regional Conference at New Mexico State University at the beginning of April. Karlyn Adams, Luke Frash, Zachary Grabowski, Daniel Kane, Jackye Lagen and Bailey Smith have been working on their 1:10 scale model bridge for their senior design project since September 2009. After this success, they now need some help to get to the national competition.

ConocoPhillips Chairman to Deliver Mines Commencement Address

James Mulva, chairman and chief executive officer of ConocoPhillips, will present “Passing the Torch of Responsibility” during the 136th annual commencement ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m. on May 14 on Kafadar Commons, 1500 Illinois St. in Golden. The Mines Board of Trustees will award 549 bachelor of science degrees, 139 master’s degrees and 20 doctorate degrees. During the ceremony, Mulva will be awarded an honorary degree.

The Masters in International Political Economy of Resources program seeks to broaden the knowledge and marketability of any Mines graduate by dealing with issues of Earth, Energy, and Environment as they intersect with local and international social tensions and alliances.
